On Remembrance Day, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and service of those who have defended Canada in times of war. But alongside the brave men and women who served, there were countless other soldiers who walked, flew, and swam alongside them: animals whose loyalty and strength proved invaluable to our forces. Today, we remember these often unsung heroes who played a pivotal role in our history and helped to shape our nationโs defense.
Animals have long served on the front lines, performing acts of courage that saved lives. Horses, mules, dogs, pigeons, and even cats were enlisted to support Canadian soldiers in various ways. Horses and mules carried soldiers, supplies, and artillery over harsh terrains and through unforgiving climates. Dogs delivered messages, sniffed out explosives, and provided companionship that helped soldiers endure unimaginable hardships. Homing pigeons carried vital communications, flying over enemy lines to deliver information that could mean the difference between life and death. Cats aboard ships helped protect supplies by keeping rodent populations under control, playing a small yet significant role in the safety and wellbeing of those at sea.
The Animals in War Dedication in Ottawa serves as a powerful tribute to these courageous creatures. Situated within Confederation Park, it commemorates the devotion of these animals with a bronze statue of a dog in uniformed regalia, symbolizing the bond between soldiers and their animal allies. Each year, it reminds us of the animals who gave their lives, willingly or instinctively, for their human companions.
At the Canadian Animal Health Institute, we are proud to support initiatives that honor the important role of animals in all aspects of Canadian life, including those whose loyalty has supported our country in times of need. On this day of remembrance, we recognize that animals have always been a vital part of our lives โ not just in our homes, but in our history.
Let us take a moment today to remember the sacrifices of all who served, including our animal heroes, and to acknowledge their enduring legacy in Canadaโs story.
