The Canadian Animal Health Institute (CAHI) partnered with Veterinarians Without Borders (VWB) to host an inaugural collaborative event in conjunction with World Rabies Day on September 28, 2021.
The nation-wide World Rabies Day Canada 2021 Webinar examined the unique challenges of rabies prevention and control in Canada’s north. It highlighted new opportunities for remote northern Indigenous Communities to manage their dog populations independently and sustainably, while helping to reduce gaps in public health and animal health outcomes.
In addition to the webinar, CAHI and VWB also hosted a Workshop, in partnership with Zoetis and Boehringer-Ingelheim, which brought together Indigenous, government and community representatives, veterinary registrars and animal health service providers from the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Yukon and northern Quebec. The purpose of the workshop was to exchange information on the impact, prevention and control of rabies in northern communities and explore mechanisms for improving access to canine rabies vaccinations through the development of a formal lay vaccinator training and certification program.
